Description

Delightful heart-shaped macarons perfect for gifting on special occasions or just to treat yourself.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup almond flour
  • 2 large egg whites (at room temperature)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Red or pink food coloring (optional)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for filling)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for filling)
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • Red food coloring (optional for filling)

Instructions

  1. Sift the powdered sugar and almond flour together into a bowl and set aside.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk egg whites until soft peaks form, then gradually add granulated sugar and whisk until stiff peaks form.
  3. Fold the almond flour and powdered sugar mixture into the egg whites gently. Add food coloring if desired.
  4. Transfer the macaron batter into a piping bag. Pipe heart shapes onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Let the piped macarons sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C). Bake the macarons for 18 to 20 minutes until firm.
  7. For the buttercream filling, beat softened butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, then mix in cream/milk.
  8. Assemble the macarons by piping buttercream onto the flat side of one shell and sandwiching it with another shell.
  9. Refrigerate the assembled macarons for at least 24 hours before serving.

Notes

Store macarons in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Best enjoyed within the first few days.
